Seven Products that I HATE that Everyone Else Seems to Love

Hello, everyone! Hope you’re all having a great week so far. I’ve been away for a bit with work, but now I’m back with what I thought would be an interesting blog post on products that really didn’t work out for me, but the rest of the world seems to adore.

Now I have a lot of make-up, and I also watch a lot of YouTube. I’ve already posted about things YouTube made me buy, but it’s not just a great platform for damaging me financially. First and foremost, I like to listen to reviews. If I’m considering purchasing a very expensive product, I type the product into the search bar and see what other people have had to say about it. If it’s something, like, say the Tarte Shape Tape that the whole wold and their mothers seems to love, then I’ve gotta buy it.

And you know what? Some of it sucks.

It isn’t easy to admit to yourself you don’t like something you’ve spent money on, especially if it’s of a more high-end price tag. But it takes all sorts to make a world, and sometimes things just don’t work out on your skin or aren’t as blendable as you like, or a multitude of other things.

I would love to know if these products worked or didn’t work for you, so please leave me a comment below and tell me about your experiences with them if you’ve had any! Because if this list includes your holy grail foundation or your go-to concealer, then I am so happy it worked for you! It just didn’t work for me! No tea, no shade, no pink lemonade, etc.

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation (£29, buy here)

This foundation hated my skin, or my skin hated this foundation. Who knows? But it lasted on my skin for maybe two hours, if that. It claims to have completely undetectable coverage once applied to the skin, but this flaked, it wouldn’t dry down in some patches, and it just made me look awful. When first applied it looked amazing, so it was great for selfies, but for me it lacked longevity and didn’t mesh with the products I used it with. I tried using it with all my favourite Too Faced products (the Born This Way concealer is one of my absolute holy grails, so you can see why I had such high hopes), I’ve tried all my favourites that I know work really well for me, and I’ve tried it with high-end and drugstore and pretty much every single primer I own. It didn’t work with a brush, it didn’t work with a beauty blender, and I even tried it with my fingers, which I never do with foundation.

Basically, I had very high hopes for this foundation, because it is so many people’s faves, but it wasn’t meant to be. I’ve already given it to a friend in the hope it’ll find a better home with her.

Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Creme (£20, buy here)

This concealer was so painfully average for twenty quid. It was fine, but when you’re paying money like that you want it to wow you. The applicator wasn’t my favourite, and in consistency I found it very similar to the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer, a Superdrug cult classic that you can pick up for less than a fiver. For a twenty pound price tag I don’t want it to be the same as something I’ve been using since I was fourteen, so my relationship with this concealer fizzled out pretty fast.

Not only that, I found it settled into fine lines under my eyes I didn’t know I had, that no other concealer has ever highlighted. I tried baking them away, but it made me look cakey as heck, so it’s a no from me regarding this concealer. Concealer is one of the make-up items I have the most of, so I think my standard of what to expect is just a lot higher. Sorry, Kat Von D, love your contour kit, your lipsticks and your primer, but this isn’t for me.

ELF Studio Baked Highlighters (£4.50, buy here)

Again, highlighters are something I have no shortage of, and I know what I like when it comes down to it. I want good pigmentation, I want a good blendability into skin and other powders on my face, and I want it to be bright and blinding.

These give me none of those things.

For £4.50 and for the chat behind these things, I had such high hopes. A drugstore dupe to my MAC Soft and Gentle or my ABH Glow Kits, perhaps?

No way.

They gave me nothing. Nil. Nada. Nichts. NOTHING.

I had two shades – Blush Gems and Moonlight Pearls – one pink, one whitey/champagney. I was really hoping that they would be dupes for two shades in the ABH Gleam Glow Kit, but honestly, they didn’t even come close. I had to apply about four coats to get anything that vaguely resembled a glow, so I googled it and apparently you need to scrape the top layer off. Ain’t nobody got time for that, I’ll reach for my Glow Kit first, thanks. Definitely don’t waste your time or money; get a Glow Kit, or a Sleek Highlighting palette from Boots if you’re on a budget.

Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liners (£15, buy here)

I am so allergic to these it’s not even funny. I have very sensitive eyes and asked the lady behind the UD counter multiple times if these were hypoallergenic, she said yes. Let me assure you they are not, and definitely not good if you have sensitive eyes. They sting like a bitch, and had to take it off straight away.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation Liquid (£29, buy here)

This is hands down the worst foundation I’ve ever put on my face. It’s so frustrating because before they reformulated it and it was just the HD foundation, it was one of my absolute favourites. I used the whole bottle religiously and got through it in about three months, and so I didn’t hesitate to repurchase it, not realising it had been reformulated. It was so frustrating because I wore this to a family party thinking I was guaranteed flawless skin, and then my great aunt asked me what was wrong with my face, so I took a look in the mirror and was horrified.

It was like the make-up was rejecting from my skin, and when I put my hand to my forehead it came away in a sticky ball of product. I was shiny, I was patchy, I was basically a huge cakey mess. I have used it once since, just to make sure, and honestly I am never putting it anywhere near my skin again. Again, it’s another foundation that looks great when first applied, but the wear is just appalling. NEVER AGAIN.

(Sidenote: the MUFE Foundation Stick, however, is really bloody fabulous and I would recommend that one over this one ANY DAY.)

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Skin Frost in Peach Goddess (£25.50, buy here)

There is no need for a highlighter to ball up on my skin as much as this one did. It’s so, so powdery and it lasted on my skin for about thirty seconds. I’ve tried multiple brushes, I’ve tried Fix+, I’ve tried layering it, and so many times it’s just come off my skin and fallen down my cheeks in these weird little powdery balls. I don’t ever reach for it because it’s so inconsistent.

And also, what the heck is the shade range for those highlighters? About three of them are wearable, and the rest are essentially giant, glorified eyeshadows. Do yourself a favour and go to MAC instead, pick yourself up one of their highlighters for the same price.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer (£5.99, buy here)

Lots of people say this is a great dupe for the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. It is not. Thank you for your time.

In all seriousness, though, the colour selection is awful, the concealer is fine but nothing special, and I don’t think it blends into my skin particularly well. It’s literally just fine. It’s a good price, but the fact that I like to use a concealer like this to highlight and it’s not got enough shades for me to do that with lets me down. If they bring out lighter and pinker shades then I’ll probably try it again, but for now I’m passing.
